my calendar tells me it's 2010. all evidence suggests someone is playing a trick on me...

following on from this morning's rant, Shirley brought this delightful piece of media to my attention:

from the BBC's coverage of Cameron's newly elected cabinet regarding the new Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equality, Theresa May (the only female cabinet member and only the second woman to ever hold the Home Sec position)

A passionate moderniser with an exotic taste in shoes, she famously ruffled feathers when she told Tory activists they were seen as members of the "nasty party".

and yes, the bold is my own.

I know what you're thinking... probably something like my reaction at first glance,
'Oh, this must have be some light-hearted get-to-know-them piece full of little personal and inconsequential anecdotes.'

Alas you, like me, would be wrong.

  1. Good news is that Theresa May isn't the only woman in the cabinet. Look out for Baroness Warsi ("Straight-talking and combative"), Caroline Spelman and Cheryl Gillan.

  2. yes, it is good news. i should have put 'at time of writing' given the full cabinet had yet to be formed. thanks for the update.

someone said to me last night: well to be fair, there *is* a context for the 'shoes' comment - remember the media fiasco when she wore leopard print shoes at the conservative party conference. it caused such a fuss!

me: ... :|... are you suggesting "leopard print shoes" and "media fiasco" were ever justifiably meant to be in the same sentence?

Hey, check it out, they removed the comment about her shoes! I think they also removed the comments about the other female cabinet members' marital status and how many kids they had! I guess sometimes complaining to the BBC actually does work. Result!

I read an article by Ian Bell in the Sunday Herald last Sunday which on looking at the new composition of the UK government in relation to class (and I would have added in relation to number of elected women) contained the line,
    "F*** me! I'm in the 1950s!"
That has pretty much summed it up for me.
[I tried to find a link to the article but the newspaper wants me to register for a free trial etc, so I'm sorry but you'll have to take my word for it. Sorry to have missed you in March.)
